Swing Set Repair and Maintenance – Houston, TX

Backyard swing sets are probably one of the best investments a homeowner can make.  When properly maintained, a swing set will offer many years of enjoyment to your family.  Probably one of the best know swing set manufacturers is Rainbow.  In order to maintain your swing set, Rainbow recommends the following:

  1. Coat your play system with a sealant or preservative annually to sustain the life of your play set. Be sure the sealant you select is non-toxic and child safe.
  2. Clean tarps with soap & water and clean vinyl dipped parts.
  3. Reinstall swing seats, tarps, flags, and other plastic components which may have been removed for the winter.
  4. Check and tighten all nuts and bolts as needed, but do not over tighten causing the wood to crack.
  5. Check all wood members for deterioration and splinters. Spot sand any areas that are checking or splintering.
  6. Check all coverings on bolts, sharp edges and corners.
  7. Hardware used on swinging elements should be checked at least twice a month to ensure proper fastening.
  8. Check all moving parts including swing seats, ropes, and chains for wear, rust, or other deterioration and replace as needed.
  9. Check swing hangers, tire swivel, S-Hooks, eyebolts, and spring clips for wear and replace or tighten as needed.
  10. Check all metal parts for rust. If needed, sand and repaint using a nonlead-based paint.
  11. Lubricate all metallic moving parts and grease Tire Swivel monthly during the usage period.
  12. Check entire Structure and Swing Beam to ensure they are level, if not adjust Structure and/or Swing Beam back to level.
  13. Rake and check depth of loose fill protective surfacing materials to prevent compaction and to maintain appropriate depth.
  14. Remember to replace any deteriorating parts.

If you are like most homeowners and don’t have the time to maintain your wooden swing set, call Taylored Home Solutions today.  We are here to help.

We recently completed repairing and staining a Rainbow swing set in Houston, Texas.  This particular swing set had not had any maintenance performed on it for about 5 or 6 years.  As you can see in the pictures, the swing set was not even level when we arrived.  This was because the A-frame boards rotted at the bottom.  In fact A-frame was 6 inches shorter than it was supposed to be, simply because the bottom 6 inches rotted away!

The first thing we did when we arrived was remove the swings, ropes, rock climbing knobs, etc. and inspected/tightend all of the nuts and bolts.  We replaced any nuts and bolts that were rusted with stainless steel hardware.  Then we removed and replaced the rotted wood.  We also re-secured any loose boards with deck screws (they do not rust).

Next we leveled the main body of the swing set by jacking each corner up and adding a concrete footing.  This ensures the swing set stays level for the foreseeable future.  Once the main body was level, we leveled the main beam (this is what the swings attach to), then we removed the entire A-frame.

To build the new A-frame, we used pressure-treated 4x4s rated for ground contact.  Before installing the new lumber, we rounded the edges with a router to remove the sharp corners.  To my surprise, the original bolts used to hold the A-frame together were completed rusted through (see pics).  We used stainless steel replacement bolts to ensure the bolts do not rust again.

Once the swing set was leveled and repaired, we began to prepare it for staining.  First we sanded all the rough surfaces with 100 grit sandpaper and then pressure washed the entire structure to remove the dirt and grime.

We let the swing set dry out for a few days and then applied two coats of Superdeck Semi-Transparent Stain.  http://www.superdeck.com/

Once the stain was dry, we reinstalled new swings, rock-climbing knobs, and climbing rope.  As you can see in the pictures, the swing set looks as good as new.  You can use the arrow keys on your keyboard to scroll through the pictures below.
