How I’m Environmentally Friendly

As we all know, the Memorial area of Houston, TX is located along Buffalo Bayou.  The bayou is one of the features that makes this portion of Houston, TX so beautiful.  But did you know, all of the storm sewers in the Memorial neighborhoods are directly connected to Buffalo Bayou?  This means that anything and everything that goes down a storm drain ultimately ends up in Buffalo Bayou.  This includes tennis balls, flip flops, and pressure washing chemicals.  Even if you wash your car in the driveway, if you let the soap run down your driveway and into the storm drain, the soap ends up in the bayou.

Because of this, I try not to use any soaps or chemicals when I pressure wash driveways and walkways.  Instead, I just let the pressure of the water do the work. However, sometimes there are tough stains that need a little extra “persuasion”.  In those cases, I will use Simple Green.

Pressure Washing Driveways and Walkways with Simple Green

When I do need a little extra persuasion while pressure washing in the Memorial area of Houston, TX, I only use Simple Green 18203 Heavy Duty Cleaner and Degreaser.   Simple Green heavy-duty cleaner is a specially formulated pressure washing concentrate designed to remove tough grease and grime deposits from a variety of non-porous surfaces.  It removes the majority of oil, grease, soot and ash, exhaust, sap, pollen, mold and mildew stains, road tar, and other tough soils from most surfaces.  But most of all, it is non-toxic, biodegradable which means it is better for the environment.

Even though Simple Green is eco-friendly, I still try to minimize the amount of water that goes down the storm drain.  I do this by directing the pressure washing water in to the yard when possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Will pressure washing remove all stains from my driveway?
Unfortunately the answer is no. Pressure washing can and does remove most stains, but since concrete is a very porous material not all stains can be completely removed.
  2. What’s that black staining on my roof?
The black mold-like stains and streaks that appear on roofs is actually blue – green algae (Gloeocapsa magma). This airborne bacterium gets deposited from various different sources, but it’s the heat and humidity, combined with the fiberglass and limestone filler components in your shingles that these bacteria FEED on. It is the accumulation of dead colonies of these cyanobacteria that create visually dark streaks and stains on the shingles. This buildup holds water, as it stains and darkens your roof – which holds more HEAT. This combination can degrade the life of the shingle; so naturally, removing the stains improves the life of the shingles.
